Mixing Directions

If You Don’t Have Enough Maternal Colostrum
Mix the entire content of one pouch (16 ounces of dry powder) of Sav-A-Caf® Colostrum Supplement into 1-1/2 quarts of clean, warm water (105° to 110° F). Mix thoroughly with a wire whisk until the powder is completely dissolved. Feed solution at body temperature using a nipple bottle, as soon as possible after birth (within 2 hours if possible). Feed at least 2 quarts clean disease-free maternal colostrum as well. Provide a second feeding of colostrum 6 to 12 hours later, then begin feeding calf milk replacer starting on day two. When supplementing milk replacer or whole milk at days 2-4: add 1/8 standard measuring cup to each feeding.
If You Don’t Have Any Colostrum
If maternal colostrum or Sav-A-Caf® Colostrum Replacer is not available, mix one pouch (16 ounces of dry powder) of Sav-A-Caf® Colostrum Supplement into 1-1/2 quarts of clean, warm water (105° to 110° F). Mix thoroughly with a wire whisk until the powder is completely dissolved. Feed the entire volume of solution as soon as possible after the calf is born. Give one to four additional feedings of Sav-A-Caf® Colostrum Supplement 6 to 8 hours apart, then begin feeding calf milk replacer starting on day two. When supplementing milk replacer or whole milk at days 2-4: add 1/8 standard measuring cup to each feeding.
Important Note on Newborn Calf Care: It is highly preferred that the newborn calf receive fresh colostrum from its own mother before beginning a milk replacer program. Colostrum is the first milking from the cow following birth, providing nutrients, growth factors, and immune globulin proteins that are crucial to the health and growth of the calf. Colostrum must be fed as soon as possible after birth for maximum absorption of maternal antibodies in the newborn. If there is not enough high-quality colostrum available, frozen stored colostrum may be substituted. If no fresh or frozen colostrum is available, use Calf Colostrum Replacer 100 according to package directions.
Important: Individual animals vary in requirements. Adjust the amount of milk replacer fed according to the calf’s body weight and appetite, the environmental conditions, and your own good judgment. In general, animals require more feed during cold weather (ambient temperature below 40° F) to maintain body weight and stay healthy. When in question about nutrition requirements please consult with your animal nutritionist or veterinarian.
